August: "The Vacationers" by Emma Straub
I saw the book has been hyped a lot recently. I mean, I'm pretty sure I've seen it recommended in every women's magazine and website that I read (which is a lot).

I really didn't have an interest, but I won a free advanced copy from Birchbox, so I read it.

Structurally, it's well written, it has a plot, it has characters, it has background details, etc. But throughout the entire book, I felt that it was lacking.

First, all these "secrets" are hyped over and over and over, but by the time they're revealed, you've already figured them out and know what's going on. So, they end up having little to no impact on the reader, and it appears the characters.

The characters all have a back story and share personal details, but I never felt a connection to any of them. I wanted to connect. I tried, I really did, but it never happened.

Additionally, it felt drawn out. I kept waiting for something to happen and then it just ended.

I did like the idea that the book revolved around a 2 week period so instead of "chapters" it is split into "days." Overall though, I felt the book was lacking altogether.

So, now it's your turn... What did you think? Tell me in the comments below!
