Even though it's September, it's still 90 degrees here in Pennsylvania. But in all honesty before we know it the weather is going to cool off.
So how do you combat freezing offices in the summer and cooler temperatures in the fall? Layers, of course! Normally I would just throw a cardigan over a dress (and maybe add some tights if it's fall), but for the past year I've gone a different route.
After watching The Mindy Project one too many times (it's my favorite show on TV right now), I noticed that Mindy also does a lot of layering for work, but oftentimes she's putting a button down under her dress.
So, I thought I'd try it for work one day and I love the results. Mindy tends to wear a lot of brights and bold patterns, but I've stuck with a solid white or black button down so far and love the results.
There was one time in February that I wore a black shirt with white hearts under a red dress to support the American Heart Association and compared my look to Mindy's on Instagram. Needless to say I did a little happy dance when Mindy herself liked the picture!
Wearing a shirt under means your dress is still front and center, unlike when you wear a cardigan that covers most of the dress. Keeping the shirt solid also means the dress is still the main focus.
Since my outfit is mostly neutrals, I added a little sparkle necklace for some flair. I actually picked this necklaced up last fall at the Boulevard of Chic event in Baltimore.
This has quickly become one of my favorite and easiest ways to dress for my day job. What do you think? How do you layer when the weather transitions or at work?
