This may be the East Coast in me, but I love a good nautical theme... it's just so peppy and cheery. While that may not be 100% California Cool, that doesn't mean I still can't wear a good anchor outfit and not blend in.

Case in point: Marina Del Rey - where you'll find a ton of boats and docks and yachts and more! The marina is tucked away between Venice and LAX and just has the cutest nautical feel to it with so many boats and seafood restaurants.

When wearing nautical themed pieces, I always try not to go overboard (pun may or may not have been intended - hah!) because you don't want to look costume-y.

The blue rope patterned tank from New York & Co. and anchor sandals from Charming Charlie give it that East Coast preppy feeling while the the ripped jeans from Pistola (I wore them recently in this post as well) and Ray-Ban sunglasses give this outfit a little more edge.

As I'm writing this, I've realized I have an anchor medallion bracelet that I purchased during our trip to Acadia Maine in 2014, that I should have worn. I rarely, remember to put on jewelry (it's just not part of my routine) and realize later what I should have worn.

My bag I purchased from Charming Charlie last year because it reminded me of this Michael Kors version, which I adored, but couldn't afford.

Also, a cardigan to ward off cool breezes from the ocean is always necessary. Years ago when I would follow celebrities or style bloggers from LA, I always wondered why they'd have a coat or cardigan -- it's California for crying out load! It's warm! It's sunny!

I wear a cardigan all the time when out not because I'm cold, but because I'm trying to protect my skin from the sun's rays!

Seriously, I went from only wearing SPF 15 on my face daily (which, if we're being honest, I should have been wearing more but I was indoors in PA all the time) to basically bathing in SPF 50+ all the time (and I've still managed to get burnt - not a good thing!).

So, two lessons here:
1. Nautical is always a good idea (just don't go overboard)
2. Always, always, always wear SPF!
